Art Calls and July Jams

July 21, 2015 by dnart

Being an artist is much more than just spending time alone in your studio. The real work is finding places to show what you’ve been working on. Step 1. Find all of the galleries near you that you can deliver your work to. Step 2. Look at their previous shows and figure out what kind of work/artist they deal with. A lot of times galleries function as co-ops and mostly work with their members, so that eliminates at least half […]

Nasty by Nature

June 19, 2015 by dnart

It’s the end of June and I have been fighting the Summertime Blues. With the longer days and the scorching heat, all I want to do is chill out in the AC with my two girls by the time night rolls around. Who doesn’t love the Wheel of Fortune? I do, but I have been really good the past few weeks and I’ve managed to crank out a couple of new paintings. Both paintings came together over time and rather […]

Dream Shopping

May 27, 2015 by dnart

Last week I took a little trip out of the South and headed for Chicago with my old lady. She had a work conference and I had the luxury of tagging along. The first day of our trip I set out by myself on a trek down the Magnificent Mile with one store in mind – Dick Blick. I am not a big shopper, even though I walked past innumerable beautiful storefronts, but I wasn’t headed to an ordinary store. […]

Spring Art Showin

April 22, 2015 by dnart

Spring has sprung and I have been busy in the studio. April has been a really good month for me in terms of exposure. My work has been hanging on both the clean, white walls of a gallery as well as the homemade, slightly crooked, fence-like walls of my mobile art exhibit that I use when I do a festival. Let me tell you, those festivals are hard work, but first, let’s talk about those white walls. VAE in Raleigh had […]

Book It

March 24, 2015 by dnart

Sometimes it amazes me to think about how pieces of the past are strung together. When things come full circle and I realize how they are connected, it blows my mind. I guess that’s a pretty typical reaction and I’m not trying to get super deep and philosophical here, but I’ve been thinking about these connections while working on my most recent mini-series. Typically I work on wood, paper or canvas, but recently I have been using book covers. The […]

Hound Doggin’ Tennessee Hillbillies

March 17, 2015 by dnart

About three weeks ago I sat down at our dinning room table with a large Elvis book titled Elvis Forever In The Groove. It was fricken cold outside and I didn’t have any paintings on deck waiting to be worked on. So I decided to thumb through this book in the warmth of the inside and maybe sketch out a few of the photographs for fun and also just to keep me sharp. As much as I wanted to sit […]

Home is Where Some of My Art Is

March 10, 2015 by dnart

Last year at the Fall Foliage Festival I got a request for a custom painting. Because I try not push my work on anyone, I said sure and asked them to email their dimensions and some color do’s and don’ts. Then I left it alone and waited. That particular festival takes place in early October. When I was home for the holidays, the project was brought up again and the client was kinda like “What the hell man? Where’s my painting?” […]

Triplets

February 17, 2015 by dnart

As an artistic person I have this thing with numbers (as do many artistic people). So when I come up with an idea or get inspiration for new work, I like to attack it in multiples. Two’s are great, but three’s are better. If the underlying theme is important enough to sit down and work out, then it’s worth exploring multiple scenarios. And that’s how I arrived with these dudes. I actually constructed these panels myself last June and did the […]

Two Shows and a Class

February 10, 2015 by dnart

I’ve had a great start to 2015. It has been very busy and productive so far, which is causing my weeks to blur together. I can’t believe that it is already mid-February. What have I been up to? Two shows in January and one studio class at NC State (go Wolf Pack) have kept me in the garage, on the inter-webs, and the highway. My first show of the year was Contemporary South, at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh. A friend […]
