Keep It Real You Dirty Hippies

I finished up another set of three portraits this week. These are painted on birch and measure 10×10 square. I used a lot of super rich bright colors in the same palette I’ve been working with the past few months.

The characters are meant to look dreamlike and unnatural. I wanted them to be a little psychedelic and for the viewer to identify the shapes that make up the faces, like the heart in the one on the top right. I think the colors help make these characters a lot less scary and definitely not as moody as they would have been if I had used dark blues and deep reds. I like seeing how my the color palette can totally change the feeling of the finished works compared to my original sketches.

I love working on paintings like these. I never get tired of coming up with new characters. Keep it real you dirty hippies.
